–> Instead of asking what the screen does with or to the sexed body, SPILT SCREEN asks what the body and video make together.If there is a bifurcation in physics – the Newtonian governing the everyday motion of bodies, and the Quanta describing observer-dependent events whose time and place slip from apprehension – then the medium of video could be said to flexibly cross-fade these two physics. That is, video splices, speeds, and frees itself from a Newtonian everydayness to which it is nonetheless tethered. But this not about science. This is about sex, and how it turns out the screen, after all, reveals what it shows: volumetric bodies becoming the outside-in surfaces (twisting in the Dirac currents) that they already are.  Those spaces without thickness that make things thick.  Adrian Piper once wrote that she wanted to withdraw into the external world. These new video works draw (out) (extend, delay) the involution of bodies, splitting the sexual difference between making and bearing.

all of the videos in SPILT SCREEN were made with simple editing and optical techniques, playing with speed and repetition to investigate how reel time intervenes in real time. in mahmud’s untitled, a news photo vibrates against the lens in a masturbatory, eerily animate rhythm; mahmud’s face multiplies itself or functions as a lunar reflector of televised light, diffusing and refracting violence. aliza shvarts is best known for the controversy caused by a 2008 sculpture. her video, birthsounds, is a kind of sound painting, a crowning baby’s head pulsing like a speaker over  folded-in lesbian porno underpainting/music. (i wasn’t able to include another of her videos which (sound)tracks the becoming-animal of a groaning migratory herd of automobiles.) patzer‘s LIPS flattens a mouth into a Möbius strip. didier clain’s call me back is a quick, dark, corporeal fold — a 48-second blip that goes black as the single source of light, a cellular phone, approaches didier’s sweetly vaginal ear. in pendulum, a materialization of the poe story the pit and the pendulum, mariya dimov becomes a literal body clock as she swings by her feet.
